AIR DISASTER

NATURE OF INQUIRY QUESTION TO MINISTER P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 10. At question time in the House of Representatives to-day Mr M. H. Oram (Oppn., Manawatu) gave notice to ask the Minister in charge of Civil Aviation, Mr Jones, if he would make a statement to the House on the nature of the inquiry to be held into the crashing of the freight transport plane on a flight from Woodbourne to Paraparaumu yesterday. Mr Oram asked the Minister for an assurance that the Director of Civil Aviation would be allowed to lead the case for-*the Air Department, and asked for a statement as' to what certificates were issued in respect to the machine in question. Since the inception of the air freight service in February, 1947, these aircraft have made 2745 crossings of Cook Strait, and yesterday’s crash was the first mishap on tne service. A Department official stated to-day that all the freight was insured, either by consignors or covered by the department's policy.
