NEW HOUSING SCHEME
ACCOMMODATION FOR FARM LABOUR P.A. PALMERSTON N., Aug. 9. “ The occasion is in many respects a unique one and may indeed become a milestone on the road of New Zealand’s progress, incorporating as it does assistance in dealing with two of the most pressing problems—those of housing and farm labour,” said Mr Cullen, Minister of Agriculture, when addressing a gathering at Sanson on Saturday. The Minister was opening State houses provided for the SansonOhakea branch of Federated Farmers’ farm labour scheme. Three houses have been erected for the purpose of providing accommodation for f&rm workers in the Sanson district, and the Sanson branch of Federated Farmers has guaranteed a minimum salary to the men and also rent to the State Advances Corporation, ,
On the subject of land settlement and suggestions made as to the cutting up of big holdings, the Minister said that not all big holdings were suitable for subdivision. There were considerations, such as contour and over-all fertility of the soil, to be taken into account.
