STEADY RISE RECORDED POSITION IN BRITAIN N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 9. Both prices and wages are continuing to rise in Britain, according to the latest information issued by the Ministry of Labour. In the first six months of this year over 3,250,000 people shared in the addition of nearly £1.000,000 a week to full-time wages. The wages index rose from 104 per cent, to 106 per cent, in the period, and the prices index from 104 per cent, to 110 per cent. Food was responsible for the biggest price rise, followed by fuel, light, drink and tobacco. In the pash year the price of food has risen by 13 per cent., fuel and light by 10.4 per cent., and drink and tobacco by 10.8 per cent., the latter figure being due to the Budget. There were' 1053 recorded strikes involving 314.200 people and causing a total loss of 1,586,000 working days in the first six months of this year. This compares with the 974 strikes involving 342.600 people and causing the loss of 1,318,000 working days in the same period last year. On the whole, industrial conditions have been much the same this year as last, with a slight tendency for irritation to show' itself rather more in strikes this year.
