PERMANENT CAMP

TRANSPORT WORKERS DUNEDIN PROPOSAL The staff of the City Corporation’s Transport Department is at present being asked to. decide whether it is in favour of embarking upon a scheme to provide a permanent holiday camp for tramwaymen. It is suggested that the camp should be at Hampden, where a suitable area of ground could be obtained, and that the purchase of the area and the erection of the buildings needed should be financed by small weekly payments by each of those who expect to take advantage of the facilities which such a camp would offer. The plan originated among members of the Dunedin branch of the Tramways’ Union, and details of the scheme will be presented at the half-yearly meeting of members. The camp is to be owned and run by the staff for the members and their families. ‘

v. It isi suggested that a site handy to , shops and transport should be purchased, and that the buildings should -<■ include a main room and a large hut as a community dining room and re- \ creation hall with tables for family groups and separate cooking facilities .. for families. Smaller huts are suggested to provide living a'ccommoda- . tion for family groups, ranging from double units to huts capable of housing six persons. The huts proposed are; to have built-in bunks, wardrobes, and other facilities. The scheme provides for other amenities required by campers, as well as playing areas for both adults and children, and it is suggested that the camp should be completed within five years. The camp is to be financed, it is proposed, by small weekly payments, which would be heaviest in the first year, but would not amount to the rental of a seaside cottage.
