OTAGO DEFEATS SOUTHLAND Two representative indoor basketball matches between Otago and Southland teams were pla'yed at Invercargill at the week-end. . ' The principal match between Southland A and Otago A was won by Otago by 34 to 20. Otago began briskly, but Southland tightened its defence, Otago finding it difficult to break through. R. D. Darracott played very soundly at centre for Otago, and Jamieson and Ward kept the Southland score very close to Otago’s by means of neat combined play. Otago held a lead.of five points ail half-time. The.second spell opened with D. Garner breaking through to put Otago further in the lead. Both teams had good defences and Wilson, an 18-year-old Southland player, showed much promise, having height as well as ability. W. Wallace, the Otago captain, held his side together ably, and steadied their play, although inclined at times to shoot from too far out.

The scorers . for Otago were Darracott (11), Wallace (8), Gamer (6), Wood (5) Fisher (2) and Gardiner (2). For Southland the scorers were Jamieson (8), Ward (8), Wilson (4), Goodsir (4). Simpson (3) and Richardson (2). The referee was Mr J. Hanna.

Southland B defeated Otago B by 41 to 33 in the curtain-raiser. For Southland B the outstanding player was Herbison, who scored 24 of his team’s 41 points. Bradley combined with him effectively and played a good game on defence. The Otago B captain, Hayman, who is a guard, played in the centre position for the first half, but dropped back on defence to steady the team up. Hill also played well for Otago. The scorers for Southland were Herbison (24), Bradley (7), Aitchison (4), Ryan (2), and Craik (2). For Otago the scorers were Hayman (8), SnellingV6). Hill (6). Anderspn (6), and Pauling (6).
