WAX-EYES
c< r —Recently you printed, under “ Wild Life in Otego.” an account of wax-eyes in which appears the following:— Australia is thought to have been the country o. origin and the birds are considered to have arrived in this country in the 1850 s. Words to this effect have appeared previously in popular publications, and there is a danger that some people might be led to believe the doubtful possibility amounts to more than it does. The famous authority on New Zealand birds! the late Sir Walter Buffer. wrote on the subject. His opinion is stated as follows:—“ The evidence which, with Dr Hector’s assistance, I have been able to collect on this subject is some what conflicting, but I have myself arrived at the conclusion that the species, whether identical or not with the Australian bird it closely resembles, is in reality an indigenous one.”—l am, etc., Interesteu.
