HIGHER WAGES
NORTHERN CARPENTERS’ CLAIM COUNTER OFFER REJECTED P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug 4. A wage rate of 4s an hour, an increase of 5d on the existing figure, was claimed by the New Zealand Carpenters and Joiners’ Union in proceedings in the Conciliation Council for. a new New Zealand (except Otago and Southland) carpenters and joiners’ award. A counter offer by the employers contained a proposal for an increase in the wage rate to 3s IOJd conditional on substantial changes in the claused governing suburban work and penal rates. This proposition was not acceptable to the union representatives and the dispute will now be heard by the Court of Arbitration. Several clauses in addition to that governing wages remain in disDuta-
