Jumpers’ Flat Field Includes Candidates for National Hurdles Honours
SPORTING
Interest in the Jumpers’ Flat at Riccarton on Saturday will be largely centred on the performances of the runners who are likely to contest the Grand National Hurdles on the second day of the meeting. Tremello, who is the top-weight with 11.3, won the Manawatu Winter Cup in June and that performance will no doubt place him among the best-backed horses in the field. Trained at Awapuni, he is a six-year-old by Ringmaster from Icing.
Wingatui stables will be represented by Boolamskee, Desert Trek, Young Bob, Tring, and Knight Crusader, and of these Boolamskee and Desert Trek will carry the most money. Both are good stayers and will be running on when the end of the journey is in sight.
Corineus, with 10.8, is assured of a big following. On the first day of the Trent, ham meeting he was second to Mangatiti in the Te Aro Hack Handicap, of one mile, and on the final day he won the Winter Hurdles from Foxchase and Skywriter. At the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting last Saturday he was brought down when Hart Royal fell.
Wee Mac looks the most likely of the others, but Corineus and Tremello may have a duel for favouritism, with Desert Trek and Boolamskee next in the order.
