Crs D. Ballantine and D. Stewart wer# appointed the Green Island Bonjugh Council's representatives Island Municipal Band Committee last of the Dunedin Competition. Society stood in silence at their annual meeting yesterday as a mark of respect to the late Mr J. D. McKechnie. who had been a committeeman of the society foi a number of years. The president, Mr I. Lawnfsald that Mr McKechnie had always taken an active interest in the competitions, and had been himself a fine per°The r well-known Union Steam Ship Company master. Captain George Watson Evans has retired after 35 years' service Born at Auckland In 1885. Captain Evanf hpcan his sea career as an apprentice or the barquentine Elginshire. He has been master of many of the Union Company s vessels, including the intercolonial cargo ship Kauri, a charge he relinquished at Wellington last month. He will spend his retirement in Auckland.
