REMEDIAL MEASURES

t LOSS OF REVENUE DUNEDIN COMPETITIONS SOCIETY Greater subscriptions by business houses and certain increases in the price of admission to the competitions were recommended by Mr J. C. H. Somerville at the annual meeting of the Dunedin Competitions Society yes terday. He said that these' measures constituted the only way in which the society could avoid ending the next financial year with a loss, as had been the case in 1947-48 for the third successive year, the latest loss being £l2O 15s 3d. “We cannot continue losing money,” he concluded. “Hali rentals have more than doubled, ana judges’ fees have increased.” Although the number of entries had increased by about 1000 last year, this had involved extra expense, with more halls and associate judges, said the president, Mr S. Lawn. There was no doubt that public support for the society would be forthcoming again, ano the great services of the society to the community fully recognised. Even the inroads on the accumulated funds were justified in the service of culture in Dunedin.

As far as the competitions were concerned, the year had beeii a great success, he continued. The 1947 festival had maintained the high standard set by the society since its inception, and the society was most appreciative oJ the support given by competitors teachers and the public, who had con tinued their interest right through the whole festival. Among the many others who had assisted the society, the valu able assistance of the members of Tor H in supplying front of house staff wa.especially appreciated. Office-bearers Elected Office-bearers elected were: President. Mr S. Lawn; vice-presidents. Messrs E. D. Smyth and L. J. Dunbar treasurer, Mr J. C. H. Somerville; secretary, Mr J. W. Wilson; auditor, Mi C. V. Bond; retiring committeemen re-elected were Messrs G. Elliffe, D Standage, W. R. Sinclair and J. McK Miller.
