MR MICHAEL GILFEDDER TRIBUTES IN HOUSE P.A. WELLINGTON, Aug. 3. The Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, moving a resolution placing on record the services to the country of the late Mr Michael Gilfedder in the House of Representatives to-day, said that the former member for Wallace was, like many of those connected with the old Liberal Party, very enthusiastic over matters dealing with social uplift and reform. “He was an enthusiastic missionary for democratic principles.” said Mr Fraser, who added that Mr Gilfedder made many useful contributions to such pieces of legislation as the Wages Protection Bill, Government Advances to Settlers Bill, the removal of women’s disabilities, and the Workers’ Compensation for Accident Bill.

“He never spared himself,” continued Mr Fraser, “ and always wanted to give an opportunity to others. He went from success to success, particularly in his sphere of judge of the Maori Land Court. Mr Holland seconded the resolution and associated the Opposition witb tbe tribute paid by the Prime Minister. Mr T. L. Macdonald, the present member for Wallace, also paid tribute to Mr Gilfedder, and Mr E. T. Tirikatene associated the Maori people with the . -solution.

The House rose at 3.22 p.m. until 7.30 p.m. as a mark of respect.
