Eight-Nation Trusteeship For Antarctic
Rec. 9 p.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 3. Diplomatic circles in Buenos Aires reported to-day that the United States has proposed an eight-nation trusteeship for the Antarctic to settle conflicting claims on South Polar territory, says the United Press correspondent in Buenos Aires. The proposal calls for a joint administration of the region by the United States, Britain, Argentina, Chile, Norway, Finland, New Zealand and Australia. Each nation claims a sector of the Antarctic and several sectors overlap. Argentina and Chile are reported to have rejected the idea. Chilean officials are said to have taken the stand that Chile would reassert her claims as soon as the international situation, was stabilised and Argentina continued to call for an international conference on the issue.
. [lt was stated last night In official circles in Wellington that nothing is known of any invitation from the United States to the New Zealand Government to discuss an eight-nation trusteeship for the Antarctic to settle conflicting claims on South Polar territory.]
