CITY TRAM FARES
APPLICATION FOR INCREASE STATUS OF TRADES COUNCIL Special Correspondent WELLINGTON. Aug. 3. When the first application of the Dunedin City Council for an increase in tram fares came before the Price Tribunal early this year the Otago Trades Council was represented and took part in the cross-examination of witnesses as well as in the presentation of submissions to the tribunal. At the recent hearing of the application of the Wellington City Council for permission to increase fares, many organisations made submissions opposing the increase. Mr Justice Hunter, president of the tribunal, stated during the proceedings that he would not allow any interests other than the applicants and the price control division to enter as full parties and have the rights of cross-examination. Not even the Federation of Labour had those rights at the hearing. An official of the tribunal said today that each case was taken on its merits, but doubt was expressed whether the Otago Trades Council, should it wish to do so, would be permitted to enter as a party into the pending proceedings for a new tram fare increase in Dunedin. If the same ruling was given as ip the Wellington case, the Trades Council would have the right only to make submissions.
