FRIENDLY BAY
Deputation to Board
A deputation from the Friendly Bay Society waited on the Oamaru Harbour Board yesterday to ask the board to consult the society when decisions were to be made on matters affecting the area on the foreshore which was being improved by the society, Mr A. F. Stock told the board that the assistance given by it to the society in its work on the bay in the interests of the women and children of the town was appreciated. The society had no complaints, and realised that decisions rested with the board, but it asked that the committee be consulted on questions affecting the foreshore such as the site for the watersiders’ new building and the site for the memorial stone for the Turakina. The society had never objected to the proposed sites, but thought the building could go alongside the macrocarpas end the stone 10 yards nearer the pole. The society admired the promoters of the memorial and would do its best to look after it.
Mr A. V. Bain pointed out that any encroachment on the area the society had improved would be detrimental to the interests of the children, for whom the society catered.
Mr A. MacMillan (chairman) said the board had every admiration for the work the society had accomplished, but it was charged with the administration of the board’s affairs. In view of possible futuredevelopment they would have to look ahead concerning the possible leasing of certain areas for business purposes. He assured the deputation that the board would consult the society when the site.were finally decided on.
Mr Stock also reported that tendeis had closed for repairing the tennis courts at the bay, at a cost of £7O, but whu s hole had been made as a safety valve to the outiall drain, the water still came over the courts.
Mr MacMillan said Messrs Cuttriss and Symon had waited on the borough engineer to have the matter rectified. The committee criticised the council's inaction in what they considered an urgent matter, and recommended that the stone wall in the locality be extended for a distance of a chain. The chairman was authorised to interview the Mayor, Mr M. F. E. Cooney, on the subject.
The question of the site for the new watersiders’ building was held over until the report was received from the Port Committee.
