HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING Mr A. MacMillan was in the chair at the monthly meeting of the Oamarn Harbour Board yesterday. There were also present Messrs C. J. Marshall, W. J. Whalan, J. Symon, G. P. Cuttriss, A. M. Malcolm, W Doig, R. C. Ruddenklau, D. WilLams, f.nd C. J. Dugdale. The Waitaki Electric Power Board advised that in 1946 the estimates for electric supply for ships at the Holmes wharf were £6OO, and at Sumpter’s wharf £720, a total of £1320, but the extra cost of lead-covered armoured cable and better equipment which had become available in the meantime, would be £lso.—The chairman stated that the financial assistance available from the Government was limited to £ 1000, and the board would be responsible for the balance. The boaid decided to accept the estimates for the better equipment at the increased cost. Mr D. MacPhail advised that he had inspected the board's F locomotive and found the engine in good working condition.—Captain Barker reported that the locomotive had been delivered on hire to McDonald’s Lime Co., on July 15. “ Good Business ”

Advice was received that 500 hardwood sleepers (Australian) had been shipped in error by the Karetu, consigned to Oamaru.—The secretary reported that the sleepers were sold readily at Oamaru at the price quoted. The chairman commended the secretary on his business acumen in attending to this matter zo promptly. When the correspondence in connection with the proposed call of the Empire Dirk to Oamaru to unload wheat came before the meeting, the board expressed appreciation of the timely action of Captain Barker, Mr T. J. Guthrie (secretary), and Mr J. Symon in securing this ship for Oamaru.

The North Otago Motor Cycle Club wrote requesting permission to hold a hill-climb on the board's road over the cape on September 4. —The chairman stated that most of the road was under the control of the Borough Council, and if the council was agreeable the board could agree to the club holding the finish of the climb on the board’s property. The request was granted. The Lane Medicine Co., Ltd., wrote requesting improvements to the drainage and surface of Harbour street. —Messrs Cuttriss, Marshall and Williams were appointed a committee to consult the board’s tenants in tire street and other interested parties, and report. Harbourmaster’s Report Captain Barker reported that during July, seven coastal ships, of 5430 tons, worked the port, compared with four coastal ships of 4204 tons in July, 1947. Inward cargo was 451 tons and outward 4273 tons, a total of 4724 tons. The entrance to the harbour was sounded, the depths remaining constant. Further repairs to the mole had been effected, 266 tons of stone being used. A start had been made on dismantling the track on the breakwater extension.
