Top-weight in Winter Cup is Likely to Be Hardest Horse to Beat

SPORTING

Howe, who has come into pronounced favour for the Winter Cup, has a burden of 10.11, or 141 b more than he carried into second place behind Soneri last season. It is not, however, a prohibitive burden, as can be seen from the records of the race. Gazique won in 1919 with 10.11, Vladimir and Kremlin won with 10.12 in 1903 and 1905 respectively, Soneri won last season with 11.4, and Toxeuma holds the record by winning with 11.5 in 1930. In Toxeuma’s time, however, the minimum weight was 9.0, whereas it is now 8.0.

By his performances, Howe has every right to be placed in the category of the great and few if any of the horses in commission have a bigger share of gameness than he has. That he is in form he proved at Trentham last month by winning the Winter Oats Handicap, of one mile, with 9.12, the minimum being 7.7. He fought on brilliantly over the last bit to win from Earldale, who had 30£Ib less to carry.

Howe is not troubled by soft tracks and in his present form he should be a hard horse to beat on Saturday.
