AMERICA’S OLYMPIC TEAM STRONG OPPOSITION FOR NEW ZEALANDERS N.Z.P.A. —Copyright Rec. 10 p.m. NEW YORK, July 12. America will send to the Olympic Games in London one of the strongest athletic teams ever assembled. Dean Cromwell, head coach of the team which comprises three athletes for each of the 22 Olympic events plus two relay teams, believes that America will win seven or eight titles for sure and named a total of 14 events in which America has good chances. Two mighty sprinters, Barney Ewell and Mel Patton, and the middledistance runner, Mai Whitefield. will lead the track lehm, but Gil Dodds, best American miler, and Charles Fonville, weight putting champion, will be left behind. Dodds, who injured a leg, did not compete in the Olympic trials, and Fonville was only fourth in the trials. Harrison Dillard, acknowledged to be the world’s greatest hurdler, failed in the final of the 110 Metres Hurdles, blit he has already qualified for the Olympic team in the relay team. Americans whom the New Zealanders Harris,’ Nelson and Holland will meet (with their winning performances in the trials) are—4oo Metres, Mai Whitefield, 46 3-ssec; 800 'Metres, Whitefield. lmin 50 3-ssec: 1500 Metres. Donald Gehrmann, 3min 52 l-ssec; 5000 Metres. Curtis Stone, 14min 40.7 sec: 400 Metres Hurdles, Roy Cochran, 51.7 sec.
