HORSES FROM RICCARTON

POOR SHOWING AT TRENTHAM Special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, July 12. The Riccarton horses, as was the case on the first day, were again disappointing at Trentham on Saturday. The starters from here totalled 17, distributed over five races, but only two of our candidates finished in the money, Money Lender and Broie each filling second place, while none of the others showed up prominently in the closing stages of their engagements. Money Lender seemed unlucky not to win the Trial Plate. He looked to have the race in hand when he bored in near the finish ana C. Stokes had to stop riding him, with the result that he was narrowly beaten. With average fortune he should be a winner very soon. Broie ran another good race but. as on the first day, he had to be content with second place. This time it was in the Parliamentary Handicap, of one mile and three furlongs. He has been runner-up four times in his last five starts, so he looks due for early success in a good open race. Indian Dawn was brought down, with several Others, when the field for the Parliamentary Handicap turned for home. She seemed to be going very well at the time. Royal Tan was out of his place in sprint company. Leigh Barton, having his first race for 18 months, will be a better horse at Riccarton next month, provided he remains sound, which is far from certain.
