VERY BAD CRIMES
RETENTION OF HANGING BRITISH CABINET DECIDES ON COMPROMISE ' LONDON, June 7. Cabinet has decided on a compromise on the hanging issue, and will put its decision before a special Parliamentary Labour Party meeting on Wednesday, says Reuter's political correspondent. It is expected that the Government will ask for party support. The compromise goes some way to* ward the abolition of hanging, but re* tains it in very bad cases. The proposal probably will be ths4 the. Home Secretary, Mr Chuter Ede, will continue to exercise a wide power of reprieve, but with the reservation that hanging be retained for certain types of murder, such as the killing of a policeman and premeditated crimes in which there are no extenuating circumstances.
