WOOL CONSUMPTION
INTERESTING EXHIBIT Some interesting facts were pointed out to the Daily Times yesterday by Mr W. F. Dick, instructor in wool and sheep husbandry for Otago and Southland in the newly formed Sheep and / Wool section of the Livestock Division of the Department of Agriculture. Although New Zealand’s national income for each individual was second only to that of the United States of America, and New Zealand was the third largest wool exporting country in the world, as individual wool users New Zealanders ranked only ninth on the world list. Wool consciousness—or lack of it—is the main problem faced by Mr Dick, whose duties include lecturing to groups of farmers wherever they can be brought together. To assist him in his work is a small but rapdly growing film library on topics .to do with sheep and wool, several major productions being at present handled by the Government Film Studios at Miramar. Part of the campaign to foster a greater appreciation of the unique and valuable qualities was the exhibit at the Winter Show, said Mr Dick. The display aimed to educate the public to wear more wool, and also to stimulate the production of a better class of wool. The display included4a wool map sent cut to New Zealand by the International Wool Secretariat, providing an interesting comparison between wool production and consumption in the different countries. The main virtues ol wool and manufacturing processes are also set out on the exhibit. It was not his task only to encourage the public to wear more woollen clothing, concluded Mr Dick. Good wool is necessary to make good cloth, and better grades were required.
