NOTES ON THE RUNNING

TAHUNA STEEPLECHASE Minstrel Boa was the last to leave and When the field settled down Sir Dragon led from First Out, Ballyaggan, French Glider, and Kosciusko. Sir Dragon showed the way over the water jump from First Out, Southland, Minstrel Boa, Ballyaggan and Maharajah. Sir Dragon was still In charge from First Out as they ran into the double brush at the second leg of which Sir Dragon, Kosciusko, Dark Warrior and Minstrel Boa fell, and Penny. Nap put in a bad jump and dropped out. Into the post and rails the order was First Out, French Glider Ballyaggan, Southland, Paladeo, Maharajah, and More Boa. French Glider and Southland each had a life at the brush fence at the seven furlongs and as they ran down to the post and rails in the back stretch First Out led from French Glider (moving up fast) Ballyaggan, Paladeo, and Maharajah. First Out was first over the last fence from French Glider, Maharajah, and Paladeo, and in the run home he drew cut for a very easy win from Maharajah, with French Glider third, Ballyaggan was fourth, followed by More Boa and Southland. Trial Stakes In the first division Scuttle was the first to show out from Marie-Rita, King of Erin, Beaugency, and Harley. Into the straight Marie-Rita and Scuttle were followed by King of Erin, Beaugency, Night Rider, and Ara Chief. King of Erin hit the front when they were straightened up but Beaugency wore him down in the run to the judge to beat him by a length, with Night Rider third and Ara Chief fourth. Then came Don t Listen, Scuttle, and Marie-Rita. In the second division Dark Molly, Brawl, Mature, and Tympani were slow to begin and at the far turn Cricket Field and Chord were out in front from Igiri, Phalenor and The Turk. Mr Micawber moved up across the bend and the order into the straight was Cricket Field, Chord, The Turk, Igiri, and Mr Micawber. At the distance Cricket Field looked the winner but Mr Micawber finished strongly to win by a length and a-half from Cricket Field, with The Turk a length away and Chord fourth. Billy Mac and Igiri were next. Otago Hurdles Lisheen and Benbecula were scratched and Forage, Sedgemere, and Beau Son got the worst of the start. Vanity King led out from Robot, Pensacola, John Gay, Batal, Siegform, Turf Topic, and Desert Trek. Robot took over the running coming through the straight followed by John Gay. Batal, Pensacola, Vanity King, Siegform Turf Topic, Desert Trek, and Sphere. Into the back Batal trailed Robot, and then came John Gay, Vanity King, Turf Topic, Siegform, Sphere, and Desert Trek. Siegform put in a bad jump at

the six furlongs. Running down to the five Batal went to the front and opened up a good lead from Robot, and Turf Topic moved into third place ahead of John Gay, Vanity King, Desert Trek and Sphere. Batal was well clear into for an easy win from Turf Topic, who held off Desert Trek. Vanity King was fourth, followed by Robot, Sphere, Siegform. Detain, Forage, Sedgmere, and John Gay. Brighton Handicap Victory Flight put up a good performance to win the Brighton Handicap, as he was one of the last to leave. Sir Raimond, Siegtone, and The Grate were also slow to begin. Kasimov led out from Silver Spray, Bright News, Show Boy, Recharge, and Plain Pal. At the far turn Sir Raimond put in a fine run on the outside, and he was up with Silver Spray and Kasimov coming round the home turn. Into the straight it was Sir Raimond from Kasimov, Silver Spray, Bright News, Show Boy, and Night Owl, with Victory Flight starting to thread his way through the field. Sir Raimond was well clear with a furlong to run, but Victory Flight finished brilliantly to beat him by a head, with Night Owl third and Bright News fourth. The order after the placed lot was Bonny Royal, Show Boy, Siegtone, Kildare Lad, and Cover Drive. Centennial Steeplechase Double Light and Amorlad were taken out of the steeplechase. Ruling Moment began well, and led out from Tenorman, Lisheen, Indian Sign, Siglow, and. Roman Son. Ruling Moment was first over the water Jump from Tamerlane, Tenorman, Siglow, Roman Son, Lisheen, Indian Sign, Eleanor Star, and Night Prince. Tamerlane and Debater came down at the stand double, and San Quentin dropped out. Over the sod wall running out of the straight the order was Ruling Moment, Tenorman, Siglow, Lisheen, Eleanor Star, Indian Sign, Kiltie, and Night Prince. At the post and rails Tenorman was the leader from Roman Son, Ruling Moment, Siglow, Lishden, and Eleanor Star, with Indian Sign heading the others. Kiltie put in a bad jump at the first of the double brush in the back straight, where Tenorman and Siglow led from Roman Son, Lisheen, and Eleanor Star. As they ran to the water jump Roman Son moved up to second ahead of Siglow and Lisheen. The last-named went into the lead after crossing the jump and was first into the last fence from Tenorman, Roman Son,

Siglow, and Eleanor Star. Lisheen went on to win by two lengths from Roman Son, with Eleanor Star the same distance away. Tenorman was fourth, followed by Siglow, Night Prince, and Kiltie. Birthday Handicap As the field swept past the post Joygiver was out in front from Connaught, Great Coon, Hunting Charm, Sea Power, Fine Night, Hart Royal, Dark Arrow. Thornbridge, Desert Victory, and Pride of Mossburn. Foxchase and Grill were well back. Across the top Great Coon went out into the lead and then the order was Connaught, Joygiver, Sea Power, Hunting Charm, Hart Royal, Graeme, Thornbridge, Fine Night and Dark Arrow Past the six there was little alterthe straight from Turf Topic, Robot, Vanity King, and Desert Trek. Batal screwed at the last jump but went on ation, but Thornbridge and Dark Arrow were beginning to move up. With four furlongs to run the order was Great Coon joygiver, Thornbridge, Graeme, Dark. Arrow, Pride of Mossburn, Fine Night, Falconbridge, and Foxchase. Grill -was still well back. Thornbridge was first into the straight from Dark Arrow, with Joygiver and Graeme next. Dark Arrow finished best to win by a length, with Graeme two lengths away and Foxchase fourth. The order after the placed horses was Falconbridge, Fine Night, Hart Royal, Pride of Mossburn, Desert Victory, Great Coon and Joygiver. Grill was last. Winter Handicap From a good start Geisha Girl was the first to break the line from Stagestruck, Verdant, Deep Harmony, Duvaals, Lorna Leigh and Special Flight. Stagestruck lost fiis place and past the four it was Geisha Girl, Verdant, Special Flight Haughty Dick, Duvaals, Deep Harmony and Grand Forest. Geisha Girl was still out in front when they straightened up for the run home, and she was followed by Verdant, Special Flight, Haughty Dick, Duvaals, Deep Harmony, Grand Forest, Special Flight and Lorna Leigh. Verdant went past Geisha Girl, but was Immediately challenged by Duvaals and Special Flight. Finishing better than usual Duvaals won from Special Flight, with Lorna Leigh beating Verdant for third. Then came Geisha Girl, Haughty Dick, Magnaform, Air Lord, Gold Song, and Bath Slipper. St* Clair Handicap When they settled down Lament was in front and she was followed into the back by Wee Mac, Volomai, Sally Gazelle, Detract, Queen Argosy, and Moonlit. At the five furlong post Wee Mac went to the front and then came Volomai and Detract. Some Sal, String Band and St. Simper were moving up at this stage, and the order into the straight was Wee Mac, Volomai, Detract, gome Sal. St. Simper, and String Band. Volomai came right away in the run home for an easy win from Wee Mac, with Some Sal getting up for third ahead of. Detract.
