Diesel Sets Ordered
“ I have it on good authority that an order for five 400 kw Diesel electric, generating sets has been placed through one of the Government’s favoured supply agents,” said the Leader of tfte Opposition, Mr Holland, at a meeting of the Auckland division of the National Party. “The arrival of this plant should help quite a bit in improving the present precarious position. Apparently the Government now agrees that we were right when we said on so many occasions that auxiliary plant is available for those who will, order it,” added Mr Holland. “I am glad to learn that the Government has at long last acted on what the National Party has been advocating for years past so as to improve the position regarding the generation of electricity.” United Nations Appeal
The total of the United Nations Appeal for Children reached £175,000 on Thursday night, reported the Dominion appeal organiser, Mr R. Malcolm, yesterday. He added that contributions direct to Wellington headquarters amounted to £2130.
Melanesian Mission The offices of the Melanesian Mis-, sion are. being transferred back to Auckland from Sydney, where they “have been since 1934, said the secretarytreasurer, Major H. S. W. Robinson, who arrived in Auckland on Thursday. For 90 years before 1934 the offices were in Auckland. The mission’s centenary celebrations are to be held next year. Mysterious Product
A visit to the Hokonuis was recalled by Sir Patrick Duff, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, when opening the Winter .Show yesterday. “ I am interested in the name Hokonui,'to whatever mysterious product 'it may be applied,” he said. “As I was studying the latest guide to New Zealand I noticed that Hokonui is a Scottish word signifying ‘Death, where is thy sting? ’ ”
Deep Depression “ I’m rather surprised to be asked back to Dunedin,” said Sir Patrick Duff, High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, when opening the Winter Show yesterday. “Last time I was here I was asked to say. a few words from the community sing. Just before I was due to speak the weather report was broadcast, and all the listeners heard was: “There is a deep depression approaching. Sir. Approval was given at a meeting of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce to a scheme sponsored by its Retailers’ Committee for the display of South island photographs in North Island shops. For the committee, Mr D. S. Dott said the cost of the scheme to the chamber would be about £SO. Mr H C. Hurst said retailers felt the scheme would be a great move. He was sure that the retailers’ section would support. it financially.
