ALARMING EXPERIENCE

DESTRUCTIVE WHIRLWIND P.A. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 28. Sweeping down the main street of New Plymouth with a roar at 9.10 a m to-day, a whirlwind shattered a plate glass window, ripped off a sign, and then swung across towards the suburbs, where it twisted radio aerials and did other damage. A shower of ■in plate glass was scattered for 50 yards when the window was torn out. A metal chimney was bent in half, and a roof plucked cleanly off a garage. The plate glass side panel window of a grocery store was cracked, a section of fence levelled, bricks whipped off chimneys and small branches off trees, and sundry minor damage was also done. , . , . Perhaps the biggest fright was experienced by a small dog, which was picked up by the wind and would have been carried away, but for the grip its owner kept on its leash.
