MAYOR OF MARTON RESIGNS UNOPPOSED AT ELECTIONS PA. ‘ WANGANUI, May 28. After serving Marton as Mayor for 2G years, Mr Frederick Purnell has resigned on the grounds of ill-health, Mr Purnell’s long period as Mayor, which is believed to be a record for New Zealand, is more remarkable because since November, 1921, when he became Mayor, he has never been opposed at an election. Mr Purnell has been a member of the Wanganui and Rangitikei Electric Power Board for the last 23 years, and the -Rangitikei Licensing Committee for the last 25 years.
