“REALLY DESPERATE”

CAR SUPPLY POSITION P.A. AUCKLAND, May 27. The announcement by Mr Nash that no additional import licences for motor cars would be granted this year was greeted with disappointment by members of the motor trade in Auckland They stated that the effect would be that people urgently in need of cars for business as well as private reasons would have to wait even longer than they expected. The president of the northern group of the Retail Motor Trade Association, Mr P. Ornstien, said the new-car supply position was really desperate. There was not one franchise holder who did not have full bookings for at least two years ahead. On the present quota the number of new cars coming into the country was totally inadequate, even for commercial use People had been waiting 10 or 12 years for a new car. For 1948, British car manufacturers had allotted and were willing to supply 20,000 cars to New Zealand, and car manufacturers in other countries could supply equally as many, said Mr Ornstien. New Zealand, however, was taking only 10,000 cars. There was an estimated demand for 50,000. The total car imports in 1938 were 28,055, and in 1947 the total was 18,905.
