SOUTHLAND NOTES

SOME PROMISING YOUNGSTERS Special to the Daily Times INVERCARGILL, May 27. More horses than usual are in work at Invercargill at this time of the year, and Southland stables will not be lacking In numbers at the Dunedin meeting next month and the northern winter meetings to follow. The tracks at Invercargill are in a heavy state, and there has been little work of interest during the past week, horses which raced at the South Canterbury meeting having been let off with light tasks. The course proper was open this morning, and a few horses were worked over sprint distances. The Turk, a recent addition to F. W. Ellis’s team, finished clear of Jump Off, with Regal Sister well back, at the end of five furlongs in lmin 9 2-ssec. the last half in 56 l-ssec. The Turk, who finished second to Flying Fort at Washdyke last week, is a good-looking four-year-old gelding by Bulandshar from Choral, a Hunting Song mare from Anthem, an imported mare, who left others in Viking, Bere Regis Crash, Clangor, and Harmonise. Another daughter of Anthem was Lyrical, the dam of Lady Lyric, who left a great race mare in Soneri. The Turk is a half-brother to Maharajah, who is also in work at Invercargill. Great Coon went away from near the mile and a-half post, but he was only doing little better than pace work until he reached the half-mile, from which point he came home in 57 3-ssec. It is unlikely that he will contest the Birthday Handicap, as the mile and a-half journey is considered too far for him. Goulash and Aganev jumped away near the mile post and ran home the last five furlongs in lmin llsec, the last four in 57sec. Goulash, who has been a disappointment to date, is to be tried over a middle distance at Wingatui. Aganev is in grand order for this stage of her preparation. Haughty Dick, who has come through his recent racing in great style, sprinted five furlongs In lmin 8 2-ssec, the last half in 54 4-ssec, and he did It well. He was assisted over the last furlong by a Lo Zingaro—Chirp yearling, who put a lot of dash into his work.

Kosciusko and Dark Warrior were schooled over a round of the steeplechase course, and completed the task In good' style. Kite High is a regular worker in R. E McLellan’s team, which also includes a good type of two-year-old filly by Paper Slipper from Snaffle, and thus a sister to Bath Slipper. McLellan is also working two yearlings, a Nizami filly from Golden Thoughts and a Siegfried filly from Bay Biddy.

F. W. Ellis is working three yearlings—a Nizami filly from Foxette, a Royal Chief gelding from Chirp, and a Lo Zingaro filly from Carolyn. The Nizami filly is bred on a similar cross to Hiraji, the last Melbourne Cup winner, being by Nizami from a Foxbridge mare. The Royal Chief youngster has also made good progress in his tasks to date. The Lo Zingaro filly from Carolyn is not as well grown as the other two. Carolyn was a Paper Money mare from Queen Astrid.
