THEFT CHARGES

BOROUGH COUNCIL LOSSES LARGE SUM INVOLVED P.A. NEW PLYMOUTH, May 27. Charged with the theft from the New Plymouth Borough Council of approximately £17,691 6s 5d in about five months, The council cashier, Bruce Norman Guilford, aged 22, single, appeared in the New Plymouth Magistrate’s Court this morning. On the application of the police a remand was granted to June 2. Asking for the remand, Senior Detective E. C. Jarrold said that Guilford had only been arrested last night and there were still a considerable number of inquiries to be made. Bail was fixed at £SOO and one surety or £SOO or two of £250, with the added condition that Guilford should report to the police daily. Ralph Eric Pickering, aged 21, a clerk, was charged with aiding and abetting Guilford in the theft of £17,691 from the borough council and was also remanded until June 2, bail being granted in the sum of £SOO with a bond of £SOO or two suretites of £250. Senior-detective Jarrold said there was a possibility of further' charges.
