NEW BUILDING
TECHNICAL COLLEGE READY IN TWO MONTHS The new home science block at the King Edward Technical College should be ready for use in about two months. The exterior work is all but complete and the contractors are at present engaged on the interior appointments. The construction of the new ■ block was begun in January, 1945, but a delay occurred when the City Council stopped the work because fire regulations concerning the brick area were being infringed. After a satisfactory solution had been reached work was started again in August, 1946, and has since been proceeding slowly. The block has been named the “Marlow Building” in recognition of the long services given to the college by the present chairman, Mr J. J. Marlow. For the past 11 years, home science students at the college have been accommodated in “portable” rooms at the rear of the main building and, needless to say, the use of the new block will improve that branch of the curriculum.
The principal of the college, Mr W. G. Aldridge, told the Daily Times yesterday that the block was designed to give experience to students without unreality. The building would contain senior and junior cooking rooms and a set of small rooms requiring almost the same kind of care as a real dwelling. Two dressmaking rooms and a lunch room would also be included in the layout, besides cloakrooms and bathrooms.
Members of the board inspected the new block, which has a frontage on Tennyson street, before the monthly meeting yesterday.
