SEARCH FOR OIL
AMERICAN ENGINEERS FIND NEW WELL MEXICAN GULF VENTURE Rec. 11 p.m. NEW YORK. May 24. America’s urgent search for now oil reserves has driven prospectors to tiro sea with success.' Engineers have struck oil eight miles out in the Gulf of Mexico, off the Louisiana coast. A huge steel platform was built in the sea, rising 60 feet above the water; which is 48 feet deep. A test bore began last March and has just found oil 7000 feet below the gulf floor. The platform is self-contained. It has three decks containing living quarters. recreation rooms, offices and machinery A daily ship service maintains supplies. The project, which was undertaken by a Standard Oil affiliate, is believed to be the first open sea well. It has already cost £372,000. The shallow continental shelf continues for upwards of 140 miles out to sea but engineers say that it will not be possible to drill in depths of ;more than. 300 feet.
