INNINGS DEFEAT

M.C.C. FAIL AGAINST AUSTRALIA TOSHACK’S DEADLY BOWLING LONDON, May 25. Australia defeated the M.C.C. by an innings and 158 runs, M.C.C. being dismissed in its second innings for 205 shortly before the lunch adjournment. Second Day’s Play A strong M.C.C. team, including four English test certainties and three probables, collapsed under the attack of Toshack and Miller yesterday and, with one wicket down for 27 in the second innings at stumps. Marylebone, in their first innings, were routed for 189 in two hours. Hutton, alone of the test certainties, showed the selectors reassuring form. Hutton's total of 52 before Toshack claimed his wicket was confidently and fluently compiled with an attractive array of strokes. He gave Barnes a very hard chance off Miller’s bowling before he reached double figures. Toshack’s six wickets for 51 in the first innings was a just reward for his best performance of the tour. He made the ball turn and lift disconcertingly. The M.C.C. batsmen gave a disappointing and rather timorous display against the Australians, says the cricket writer in The Times. The pitch presented no insurmountable difficulties and it' was mainly ill-judged stroke play which caused the collapse bordering on calamity. Scores: — Australia First innings 552 M.C.C.
