FOOTBALLER’S DEATH

COLLAPSE ON PLAYING FIELD The deceased had unfortunately been playing football when he was suffering from heart trouble, said Mr Willis in giving his verdict at an inquest held into the death of James Gorrie, aged 37, a waterside worker. Sergeant A. G. Beal represented the police. Harry Calverley Macdonald said he was the referee in the senior association football match between Watersiders and Maori Hill at Prospect Park on April 24. About 10 minutes’ before time he went over to Gorrie, who was lying on the ground. Gorrie was given medical attention on the sideline. James Alexander Stevenson, who was playing as goalkeeper for Watersiders, said he saw Gorrie, the left full back, double ut> about 10 minutes before time. Witness did not see anything occur during the game that might have caused death. , .... Dr Prudence Ann Fitzgerald said the deceased was admitted to the Public Hospital at 4.45 p.m., death having taken place a few minutes before his arrival at the hospital. , x , ~ . . Dr E F. D'Ath said that death had been caused by sudden heart failure, the result of degenerative changes in the coronary arteries. The coroner gave a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence.
