TRAMWAY DISPUTE

DEPUTATION TO MANAGER “ OUTSIDE AUTHORITY ” MENTIONED Submissions that the “ status quo ” should be maintained until such time as some “ competent outside authority ” could be set up to consider the issues in the dispute were made to the en-gineer-manager of the Corporation transport department, Mr L. C. Greig, by a deputation from the Dunedin branch of the New Zealand Tramways Union yesterday afternoon. The question disputed by the union is the payment of men who normally perform the duties of acting; bus drivers, motormen and one man cable car drivers. It was stated earlier that if the union did not receive satisfaction from the engineer-manager, the men affected would not perform these acting duties. “Mr Greig informed the deputation yesterday that he personally could not give any undertaking or any assurances whatsoever, and that he would notify the union by letter this morning after discussing the matter with those in authority,” the president of the union, Mr W. B. Richards, told the Daily Times last night. “ In the meantime, all the arrangements made for holding two shift work meetings to-morrow hold good, although the meetings will be dependent on the outcome of Mr Greig’s consultations.”
