FORMER CITY ENGINEER
DEATH OF MR W. D. R. McCURDIE P.A. AUCKLAND, May 24. Mr William Duncan Ross McCurdie, a pioneer surveyor in South Otago jjnd city engineer in Dunedin from 190 a to 1924, has died at Te Awamutu, in his ninety-third year. Born in Ayr, Scotland. Mr McCurdie came to New Zealand in 1877. After passing civil service and surveyors’ examinations, he was engaged for several years in pioneering survey work in the Owaka and Catlins bush district. He also surveyed estates taken under Government subdivision plans. Later he visited Britain and the United States to study engineering developments. On his return to New Zealand. Mr McCurdie was appointed Government district engineer for Otago and supervised the laying of the first asphalt road in the Dominion. Mr McCurdie is survived by his wife.
