Increased "Trading Results

An increase of £448 in trading results was experienced by the Waitaki Electric Power Board during April, the figures being £2232 compared with £1784 last year. The sales of electricity were on a par with 1947 at £3937, and the amount charged to hire-purchase, accounts was £l5B compared with £SOB in March. The balance outstanding on hire-purchase accounts was £3577 compared with £3932 in March. This information was given in the secretary’s monthly report submitted to the board yesterday morning. Mr A. B. Lung was in the chair, and there were also present Messrs N. H. Colquhoun. J. Gerrie, D. E. Neave, J. Newlands, G. O. Pringle, A. H. H. Pearce, and J. I. McEwan. The Rural Electrical Reticulation Council advised that the levy had been fixed at I per cent, of gross revenue, the amount in the board's case being £2OO 13s sd. Received. The Power Boards’ Association forwarded a copy of submissions to the Electricity Controller advocating an immediate curtailment of 50 per cent, in the hours of broadcasting.—The New Zealand

Radio Manufacturers’ Federation forwarded a statement claiming that while a reduction in broadcasting hours resulted in a very small saving of power it reflected unfairly on a vigorous New Zealand industry.—The letters were received without comment. The engineer, Mr N. A. Davidson, reported that to date 1736 concrete poles and 294 stub poles had been made. Since the power restrictions were brought in there had been an over-consumption of 276,658 units. For the last week the allocation was 518,322 units, and 532,020 units were used, an excess of 13,698 units. The over-consumption for this week was 2 per cent., which was' considered satisfactory. Mr Davidson reported that they were now coming to the worst part of the year so far as peak load was concerned, and the controller drew attention to' the fact that on the South Island . system the period of radio silence indicated the period of peak load.
