RESEARCH PLANNED
SNOW CONDITIONS ON mountains SAFETY OF SKI-ERS PA WELLINGTON, May 24. 'in order to ensure greater safety for skiers on mountains, the Ski Council of the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand has taken up a scheme involving research into snow conditions. At a recent meeting of the council in Wellington it was reported that the Christchurch Club had instituted a system of ski patrols, members of which are also trained in first aid. Besides assisting anyone who may be injured on the mountains, it is one of the duties of the patrols to take preventive measures against accidents by enforcing recognised rules for safe ski-ing. A deputation which recently waited on the Minister of Internal Affairs. Mr Parry, regarding matters of interest to skiers, advised that as a result the Minister had called for reports on several subjects. These reports have already been drawn up for presentation to the Minister. On the basis of last year’s record entries, it was considered that the prospects were excellent for this year’s championships at Queenstown, the orgainsation for which was well in hand. Similar arrangements have been made as for last winter for” broadcasting snow conditions at ski resorts every Thursday evening.
