OTAGO RUGBY UNION
MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE The weekly meeting of the Management Committee of the Otago Rugby Football Union was held last night, the president, Mr R. W. S. Botting, occupying the chair. Nelson Team’s Tour Advice was received of the itinerary for the Nelson team's southern tour. The dates approved were:—v. Ashburton, September 11; v. North Otago, Sepetmber 15; v. Southland Sub-unions, September 18; v. Otago Sub-unions, September 22; v. Canterbury Sub-unions, September 25. The chairman said that it was possible the match between the Nelson team and the Otago Sub-unions’ side would be played at an Otago country centre to be recommended by the conference of subunions’ delegates on June 8. University Matches The New Zealand Union advised its approval of July 7 as the date for the match at Auckland between North and South Island Universities’ teams and July 10 as the date for the match between a New Zealand University team and Auckland. North Otago Request Tile North Otago Union sought a match at Oamaru with the Otago representative team prior to the commencement of the Ranfurly Shield engagements. The chairman of the Flag Committee, Mr E. Kerr, intimated that even now it would be possible to: play only three club matches in the second round and this was dependent on the weather conditions. It was decided to advise the North Otago Union that it would be impossible to send a team to Oamaru in the time at the Otago Union’s disposal. Payne Trophy Match The Canterbury Union advised that it had arranged accommodation for a party of 20 in connection with the Payne Trophy match between the premier teams of Dunedin and Christchurch at Christchurch on September 18.—Noted. Ocean Beach Domain The secretary of the Ocean Beach Domain Board. Mr F. R. Grindley, advised that the ground at Hancock Park would be available at a fee of £lO 10s for the season. He also intimated that the board planned to have the covering of the new area adjoining the Watea Croquet Club’s lawns completed during the present winter season.—Noted. Seven-a-side Tournament The North Otago Union advised that a seven-a-side tournament would be held at Oamaru on June 7. Entries were invited in the following grades:—Senior, Junior, Third, Fourth, Fifth (9 stone and under). Sixth (8 stone and under), Seventh (7 stone and under), country primary schools (open), excluding junior high school, all primary schools, town and country, but excluding junior high school, and interbusiness house (separate competition). Entries will close on May 31. Junior Selectors Messrs D. Palmer, L. Hill and A. Wilson were appointed as selectors of the Otago Second Grade representative team, with Mr Palmer as convener. Sub-unions’ Conference The secretary of the South Otago Subunion, Mr L. A. Hayward, wrote with reference to the union's decision to have only one delegate from each sub-union at the conference of sub-unions’ delegates on June 8. The writer added that South Otago found it hard to reconcile this decision, particularly in view of the fact that the union’s rules stated that a sub-unions’ executive should be constituted each year, this to consist of the sub-unions’ elected delegates to the Otago Rugby Union. As South Otago had three delegates on the union, it was the decided view of the sub-union that at the meeting on June 8 it was entitled to be represented by three delegates. It vjas resolved to advise the South Otago Sub-union that each sub-union had been invited to send one delegate to the conference, and that this was in accordance with the union’s rules. Junior Representative Games The secretary of the Junior Advisory Committee. Mr W. J. Nelson, advised that the committee approved a Third Grade representative match with Southland, but recommended that the match be played in Dunedin, as the Second Grade representative match would be played in Invercargill.—The matter was referred to the Flag Committee. Mr J. Hayes, the referees’ representative on the committee, asked whether it would be possible to defer the introduction of the recent amendments to the rules until the referees had had an opportunity of studying them fully. The chairman pointed out that May 29 had been decided upon by the New Zealand Union as the date for the introduction of the amendments. The meeting confirmed the decision that these should come into force on Saturday. Player Reinstated The New Zealand Union advised that the application for reinstatement of James Browning had been granted upon the recommendation of the Otago Union.— Noted. Saturday’s Matches
