COMMUNITY SINGS

EIGHTEENTH BIRTHDAY SEASON OPENS ON FRIDAY The weekly community sings in Dunedin will have their eighteenth birthday on Friday, when the first sing of the new season will be held in the Strand Theatre. The community sing committee is anxious that the opening effort should be a good one financially, as the proceeds are to be devoted to the United Nations Appeal for Children. The sing leaders will be the same this year. Mr H. P. Desmoulins will be the leader, Mr A. H. Pettitt will be at the piano, and Mr J. F. Himburg is the secretary-treasurer. Mrs M. A. Mclntyre is again in charge of the stall. The sings have proved a tremendous success in the past, and proceedings will again be broadcast from 4YA for the benefit of country people and those in the city who are unable to attend. In recognition of Otago’s centennial, Mr Pettitt will play his “Centennial March," a orize-winning composition in the New Zealand centennial competition. New songs will be introduced both at the opening sing and during the remainder of the season. The sing will begin every Friday at noon, ana will continue to 1.30 p.m.
