MANIOTOTO

Special to the Daily Times RANFURLY, May 23. Matches played in the Maniototo Rugby Sub-union's competition yesterday resulted:—Senior: Becks 9. Southern 3; Gimmerburn 13, Strath Taieri 11; Ida Valley 10, Patearoa nil. Junior: Naseby 11, Ranfurly 8; Strath Taieri 14, Patearoa 9. These results bring the senior competition to an interesting stage, with three teams—Patearoa, Ranfurly and Gimmerburn—lying equal with six points each. Three other teams are second equal with four points each. The games on Saturday were played in a misty drizzle and in the main, were confined to the forwards. Gimmerburn and Strath Taieri had a keen struggle with the forwards fairly evenly matched, the backs finding it almost impossible to handle the ball. Gimmerburn adapted itself to the conditions better than Strath Taieri. Ida Valley’s win by 10 points over the leading team, Patearoa, came as a mild surprise. This game also provided a keen forward struggle with Ida Valley slightly shading its opponents. On the run of the play Ida Valley deserved to win. By defeating Ranfurly on its home ground in an interesting, though not spectacular game, Naseby is now at the head of the junior competition with a twopoint lead over Strath Taieri and Ranfurly. Women’s Hockey Results of matches played in the Maniototo Women’s Hockey Association competition on Saturday are:—Patearoa o, Ranfurly nil; Naseby 4, Becks nil.
