LOSS OF PAINTINGS
FIRE IN ART STUDIO CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE p.A. TIMARU, May 23. Valuable art works were destroyed and considerable damage was done to tearooms and an adjoining drapery shop when a fire broke out in an art studio on the first floor of a building in Stafford street, Timaru, at 6 o clock this morning. It is thought that the fire was caused by either heat penetration or from smouldering rubbish falling on to the floor from an open fireplace in the studio. The alarm was given when a police constable on the beat heard an explosion as the windows of the studio were blown out. The Timaru Fire Brigade had the outbreak under control in about three-quarters of an hour. _ Apart from the loss of paintings, considerable damage was done by water and smoke to materials m the drapery shop. The buildings were amply covered by insurance, which is held by several firms
