SOUTHERN’S SUPERIORITY

UNEVENTFUL GAME

Southern defeated Training College by 9 points to 3 in the game played at the University Oval. Although receiving the larger share of the ball. Southern could not cross Training College’s line, and it 4 nine points came from goals kicked by A. Howley from penalties. Southern dominated" play throughout, and in the second half Training College was in Southern’s territory only on three or four occasions. Southern’s inside backs .repeatedly held the ball too long and thus deprived the outside backs of opportunities to score. Another contributing factor to Southern’s inability to score was the sound tackling of the Training College backs. The game developed into a forward tussle in the later stages, with Southern having a superiority in the scrums.

The only try scored throughout the game was the outcome of a brilliant dash by Campbell when he intercepted a pass on Training College's line to run half the length of the field and pass to Harley, who scored wide out. Mr L. Giles was the referee.
