American “Soldiers of Fortune” in Palestine

Rec. 10 p.m. WASHINGTON, May 22. “ Soldiers of fortune ” are fighting for both the Arabs and Jews in Palestine according to reports from different American sources, one of which indicates that Americans in the pay of opposing sides are shooting at one another from United States war surplus tanks. The Chicago Tribune correspondent, in a message from Ramallah, alleges that deserters from the British Army and Palestine police are serving with the Arab irregular “ liberation army ” commanded by Fawzi Bey Kawakji, a notorious guerrilla leader. Simultaneously, the New York World Telegram writes: “ If any one lifts the hatches of those United States war surplus tanks now in action in the Holy Land they are going to find some strange commanders inside. When the tanks were originally sold, both sides of the war in the Middle East hired former tankmen of the United States armed forces as instructors at 600 dollars a month. None of these men has returned so it is presumed in Washington that they are shooting at one another for fatter pay as soldiers of fortune.”
