New World Speed Record Claimed by American Airwoman

Rec. 9 p.m. NEW YORK, May 22. Jacqueline Cochran, the noted American, airwoman, claimed a new world speed record of 446 miles an hour for a closed course of 2000 kilometres after she flew a special plane to-day from Palm Springs, California, to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and return. The National Aeronautical Association representative who clocked her announced that the time was 2hr 46min 38sec. The record which she challenged, 440 miles an hour, was established by Lieutenant J. J. Hancock, United States Air Force, in a jet “ Shooting Star ” on May 19, 1946. Jacqueline Cochran’s claim still needs official verification.
