OCCUPATION OF JAPAN
BRITISH COMPONENT’S RECORD COMMANDER’S GLOWING TRIBUTE LONDON. May 21. Lieutenant-general H. C. H. Robertson, commander-in-chief of the 8.C.0.F., said that the Australians were the most conscientious occupation troops in Japan. This surprised him. because he had always thought they were casual. General Robertson, who is in London for a British Army commanders’ exercise, said: “All the peoples of the British Commonwealth should be tremendously proud of the work their forces performed in Japan—proud of their behaviour, guidance to the Japanese in democracy, and an example in life.” General Robertson said that never in history had a force been so well looked after morally and materially as the 8.C.0.F. He had seen no sign among the Japanese of resentment at defeat. The Emperor was more popular than ever possibly because he was now a limited monarch and closer to the people.
