ENDING OF TEA RATIONING

MOVE BY AUSTRALIA UNLIKELY GOVERNMENT SUBSIDY STILL * IN BEING SYDNEY, May 22. The Federal Government is unlikely to follow New Zealand's lead in abolishing tea rationing for some time, because of the difficulties involved in the payment of the subsidy to keep the retail price down. This financial year the Federal Government is spending £5,500,000 in subsidy on tea to keep the price down to an average of about 2s lOd a pound. The Government estimates that if it abolishes the subsidy the retail price of tea would rise immediately by between 2s and 2s 6d a pound.
