MUCH FLOODING REPORTED

p.A. WELLINGTON, May 23 A southerly storm with very heavy rain lashed Wellington city and a large part of the province last night and throughout to-day. Severe flooding occurred in the lower Manawatu and Wairarapa districts. Water covers the roadway in places between Levin and Shannon, making the use of the other route via Foxton preferable for traffic to and from Palmerston North. The Automobile Association states that several roads in the Wairarapa are under water. Martinborough township was isolated this afternoon. The Hutt River is in high flood and low-lying parts of the Hutt Valley are inundated. The Taita-Gorge road was closed by storm damage.
