OAMARU COMPETITIONS
Successful Demonstrations Special to the Daily Times OAMARU, May 22.
The annual festival of the Oamaru Competitions Society was concluded to-day with four dancing classes in the morning, a matinee in the afternoon, and a demonstration concert at night. The Opera House was filled both afternoon and night, and the high standard of performance right through the week was reflected in the excellence of the demonstrations by the prize-winners. Visiting competitors in the dancing classes gained most of the awards, but with little or no competition from other districts local competitors were at-full strength on the musical side in the concerts, which were greatly enjoyed by the large audiences. The society’s trophies were presented at the night performance by Mrs V. E. Doran, and Mr V. E. Doran, president of the society, suitably acknowledged the support given the competitions from such a wide area from Blenheim to Bluff, and returned thanks to the judges and all who had assisted throughout the week’s festival.
The awards on Saturday morning were as follows:
Highland Fling (10 and under). Sixty entries.—J. Ellis (Christchurch) 1, F. Smaill (Balclutha) 2, N. Williams (Invercargill) 3. Character Dance (16 and under).
