OVER 51,000 APPLICATIONS

MINISTER GIVES STATISTICS P.A. WELLINGTON, 1 May 21. Applications for State rental houses on hand at April 30 totalled 51,780, 14,164 being from ex-servicemen in the preference category and 37,661 being in the civilian category. The Minister in Charge of Housing. Mr Hackett, stated to-day that during April the total number of houses let or relet throughout the Dominion was 355. Of these tenancies, 159 were granted to applicants eligible for the preference extended to certain classes of ex-servicemen. In the same month. 957 applications for State tenancies were lodged, comprising 374 to the Rehabilitation Department by eligible ex-ser9iccmen and 583 applications in the civilian category to the State Advances Coroporation. From the inception of the Government's present housing scheme up to .April 30, 25,540 new tenancies had been made available to applicants in both civilian and exservicemen’s categories.
