ART OF BAKING

RAISING STATUS OF TRADE PROPOSED SCHOOL IN EACH ISLAND P.A. WELLINGTON, May 21. In anticipation of a favourable decision from the Arbitration Court, preliminary plans are being made for the establishment in each island of a school for bakers and pastrycooks. The draft proposals for the organisation and syllabus have already been prepared by the Commissioner of Apprenticeship, Mr H. C. McQueen. It was almost certain that the South Island school would be at Christchurch, where the Wheat Research Institute was established, but the location of theNorth Island school would have to'be given some consideration, said Mr McQueen to-day. It was doubtful whether the schools would be in. operation until late in 1949. “Bakers are anxious to lift the status of the trade and attract into it the right type of boys,” he said. “They consider this one way of giving the boys proper instruction in the theory and practice of baking, and that it will make the trade attractive and produce men able to cope with the present-day conditions of baking.” Mr McQueen's report will be considered by the Education Department, which will control the schools, should the court approve their^establishment
