RACING NEWS

By the Sporting Editor May 22 Waikato R.C. *•" May 22 Sth. Canterbury J.C. May 22 Foxton R.C. May 29 Levin R.C. June 5,7, 12 .. Dunedin J.C. Jottings The Wingatui-trained Victory Star is an unlikely starter at Wgshdyke to-day. Handicaps for the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting will be declared on Wednesday, and acceptances are due on Friday. Graeme’s chances in the South Canterbury Handicap will be improved if the track happens to be soft. Douglas Haig has not been raced since January, and so may not be ready to show his best form in the Fairlie Handicap at Washdyke to-day. A Fresh Horse

Batal, a fresh horse in the South Canterbury Handicap, scored his only win this season in the Monowai Handicap, of one mile, at the Riverton meeting at Easier. He carried 7.12, and the place-getters were Sea Flower 7.2 and Heroic Girl 7.12. He got away slowly, but finished brilliantly. A Good Record

Among those who regularly ride work at Wingatui is J. Dooley, who has been riding for a much longer period than any of the other jockeys located at local headquarters. He holds something in the nature of a record by having ridden the winners of the six galloping events at one of the Tuapeka Jockey Club’s meetings, and he followed this up by finishing second in each of the six galloping events at the Beaumont meeting two days later.

Bound for Auckland R. Heasley took Prize Ring and Incitatus to Timaru yesterday, and they will start on the journey to Auckland after racing at Washdyke. They will be accompanied to Auckland by Booiamskee, who. will be looked after by his owner, Mr E. R. Curtis.

Trip Cancelled Mr J. E. Brunton has decided against sending Page’s Raid to Auckland as he was not satisfied with the weights, in addition to which the Night Raid gelding has been under a cloud. Night Owl

The Nightly gelding Night Owl has been started nine times this season for a win, three seconds and two thirds. At the Dunedin meeting in December he won the Trial Handicap easily from a big field, and on the second day of the same meeting he was beaten by a head by Renege. Night Owl is engaged in the Southburn Handicap at Washdyke to-day. Northern Steeplechasers It is something of a coincidence that although they are not directly related, Good Armour and Master Meruit, who finished first and second In the Waikato Steeplechase, have something in the way of a connecting link. Good Armour is by Dink from Armutum, the dam being a daughter of Poly de Luxe, and Master Meruit is by Master Colossus, who is a half-brother by Colossus to Poly de Luxe.
