IMMIGRANTS’ JOBS

POLICY OF DEPARTMENT p.A. WELLINGTON, May 21. The general policy of the Immigration Department was that persons who came to the Dominion under the Government’s immigration scheme remained in the jobs they had contracted to do for two years. This comment was made to-day by an official of the department in reference to an Invercargill report of a discussion at a meeting of the Southland Hospital Board concerning priority immigrants who had left their nursing training to take other jobs. The official added that in some cases, however, settlers were psychologically unsuited to the’type of work assigned to them. In these circumstances they were transferred to other essential work. Each case was considered on its merits before a transfer was granted.
